Diabetic’s Friend
I have been making a medicated herbal oil for my son, age 8 and Type 1 diabetic, for a few years now. Watching him bravely accept the numerous and painful finger pricks required to monitor his blood sugar, I looked to my herbal pharmacy to offer him relief. This current version is his favorite and he thought it would be a good idea to share it with others who might benefit from it.
We have found that a drop or two per finger, once or twice per day, can not only lessen the pain of the pricks, but also soften the hardened skin caused by these small but repetitive injuries. The act of massaging the oil into the skin also benefits the fingers as massage itself is known to increase circulation, thereby aiding in the healing process.
An additional benefit of Diabetic’s Friend is the application to insulin injection sites. With frequent and repetitive use, these sites, often the thighs or backs of arms, can develop lipo-hypertrophy, a thickening of the skin. This can inhibit the proper uptake of insulin and adversely affect blood sugar control. We have found that this formulation not only prevents the thickening of tissues from happening, but also softens the skin and returns the site to a normal suppleness should the problem already exist. Vigorously massage a generous amount into the area, at least once per day until resolved.
The herbs selected for this formulation were combined for their traditionally recognized actions. Together, they contain strong pain killing properties, increase circulation, soften hard tissue, and effectively heal wounds.
