This formula is basically a simplified version of the cuts and scrapes salve. It is a combination of some of the most important herbs from Western and Chinese medicine. The comfrey, plantain, and calendula represent one of the most common three herb combination found in the external products of this type in Western herbal medicine. Comfrey and plantain both contain allantoin which increases cell proliferation and wound healing (engender flesh) and thus shorten the healing process. When these two are combined with calendula which also engenders flesh but has a mild while definite blood quickening action the three herbs work in concert as a powerful combination to heal the skin. The addition of St. John’s wort and zi cao gen, what I call “the red herbs” because they are the herbs that give the salve its red color strengthen the above three significantly, both clear heat and work together to support the flesh engendering function of the first three. Add to this the power of di yu and you have what I believe is the most powerful six herb combination as a purely skin healing dui yao. This formula is simplified for a lip salve because the other herbs in the cuts and scrapes formula are not necessary for the lips. Furthermore the lip salve is flavored to give the user a pleasant taste on application. -Thomas Avery Garran
