This formula was inspired by some information I had gotten while treating a severe case of shingles. Originally the formula was used simply as a ground powder applied to the affected area. The original patient stated that there was marked relief after the first application, but experience has taught me that this is not always the case. However, most people have reported more than 50% reduction of pain within 1-3 days. The lobelia seed has a long history of use externally as a pain reliever and combines well with wblx to quicken blood, move qi and relieve pain. Cayenne is a strong moving and warming medicinal that has a counterirritant antiinflammatory action. It is very effective for many types of external pain syndrome and in this formula is primarily used to activate the other two herbs and assist n the penetration of the formula.
